Security Council

The Security Council is an important organ of the United Nations Organization. The Articles 23 - 32 of Chapter 5 of the United Nations Charter deals with the composition, functions and powers, voting, procedures and about pacific settlement of disputes, action with respect to threats to the peace, breaches of the peace, acts of aggregation and regional arrangements under the purview of the Security Council.


  • Article 24: Primary Objective is to maintain International peace and security


  • 15 members
    • 5 Permanent Members - USA, Britain, Russia, China, France
    • 10 non-permanent members elected for a term of 2 years
  • Each member shall have one representative. Each representative will have one voting right. 9 voting rights are required to adopt a resolutions, including 5 votes by the permanent members
